Taking Flight has been developed across the summer term by BloominArt, a female-led community arts organisation based in Tees Valley, and Theatre Hullabaloo artists Claire Rimington and Jilly Hargreaves.

BloominArt have been working with Darlington schools to develop and create sculptural willow birds that encapsulate the individual school values and pupils’ voices. The sculptures are co-designed, built and create on design principles, sculpture, printmaking and poetry. Creative Writer Emily Wiseman from Write Up and Rise Ltd is working with the children to create audio poetry to accompany the sculptures.

This school holiday project is supported by Darlington Borough Council’s Holiday Activity Fund reaching lots of children.

This schools’ programme is part of In2, working with Year 6 pupils in Darlington, to give them access to creative activities and performances on the build-up to transition to secondary school. The project helps to build confidence and resilience, and foster self-efficacy, during this challenging time in young people’s lives.

In2 collaborates with artists and performers who work across music, visual arts, creative writing, performance, and illustration and is based at Darlington Hippodrome Theatre with the support of Darlington Borough Council.
